The coffee invitation didn’t exactly end at just coffee and pastries. We ended up downing cocktails, on a Tuesday afternoon, while working in between and while exchanging stories–the joys of remote work, where one can be productive even in the face of mild inebriation.
I was possibly two cocktails in as I realized, I may have been listening too intently at her stories. I may very well have looked somewhat like this:
It’s one of those social cues that would have showed any investigating entity just how invested I was in her–stories, actions, and all. And so mid-conversation I started to become conscious of myself: Was I staring too much at her? Because the last takeaway I want her to glean from this afternoon engagement is that, this was a weird moment for her.
I had a good time with her, though my ability to read people had failed me numerous times at this point. I wasn’t sure if she also enjoyed it the same way I did. But I’m hoping every time she comes across this restaurant, she would remember the coffee, cocktails, and conversations she had with me.
